Dr David M.H. Foo
Post-Doctoral Research Associate
David gained his PhD from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, in 2005 for his thesis, titled "Online Partial Discharge (PD) Data Acquisition and Mapping for Underground High Voltage Cables". The project was carried out in collaboration with Scottish Power Ltd. and Diagnostic Monitoring Systems Ltd. During the time, he was also awarded the Chevening Technology Enterprise Scholarship (CTES) in 2004, where the prospects of commercialisation were investigated.
Upon completion of his PhD, he embarked on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Programme with Loughborough University and Campbell Scientific Ltd. from 2007 to 2009, working on a multidisciplinary project in designing and constructing a ceilometers, used for measuring cloud base height. He focussed on the development of the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms and the operating system used in the ceilometers. He was later offered an additional 6-months contract by the company to finalise DSP algorithms for the first ceilometers prototype.
In November 2009, David joined Heriot-Watt University Waves and Fields Group as a Research Associate, to work on application adaptive optics and wavefront sensing technology for the enhancement of Bio-Imaging Microscopy. The project involves collaboration with Centre for Human Reproductive Science and Scientific Development Unit, Birmingham Women's Hospital and Cairn Research Ltd. He will be working at Heriot-Watt for 18 months and will be moving to Birmingham in the second stage of the research project.
